Yamilla Tate Bio:
Yamilla Tate (she/they) is a poet/slam poet/writer based in Buffalo. Buffalo born, Puerto
Rican raised, Yamilla’s work focuses on themes of cultural identity and pride, queer
themes, womxn’s lives, and the confusing but beautiful experience it is to be human. She
writes in English and Spanish and she heavily focuses on being proud of your roots,
communities, and being unashamed of who you are. Social justice takes a significant role
in her writing. Yamilla writes with the intention of imbuing her words with the messages of
justice her childhood needed and that others may be needing to hear. While her writing
comes from the lens of her experience, she believes the desire for representation, of finally
hearing something you couldn’t have articulated before, and to feel the freedom of pride in
who you are and where you come from is a universal human want and need.
Yamilla Tate’s work has been featured by the Just Buffalo Writing Center, and she has
forthcoming publications. She has been a featured poet for various events in both the
United States and Canada, including: Beyond Boundaries’ screening of Going to Mars: The
Nikki Giovanni Project, The Pure Ink Tapings, Alt Crawl, among many others. Tate is also a
slam poet who has competed at the national level and in Canada. She formed part of the
Pure Ink 2024 and 2025 Slam Team and traveled to Pompano Beach, FL, and Knoxville, TN
for the Southern Fried Poetry Slam. Tate has also competed in poetry slams in Hamilton,
ON. You can find her taking part in performances/events and vending around Buffalo and
she is currently writing for various projects.

Los Artistas del Barrio Buffalo is proud to be a collaborative partner in this far-reaching community project under the leadership of Celeste Lawson. Below is an abstract of the project, which will be a testament to how the arts can heal the spirits, minds and hearts of those who have been victims of sex trafficking and other kinds of violence against women and children. There will be more information to come.
“Typography Of Women: I Am Not Invisible project is a three-part project that includes a live stage performance, a public discussion and forum and an art exhibit themed around human trafficking and each individual artists’ own interpretation of that theme and what it means to them at any point in time.
The stage performance takes place on Saturday, March 21, 2020 in Rockwell Hall Performing Arts Center, the public forum on Sunday, March 22, 2020 in the Burchfield Penny Museum.
The art exhibit that will display Los Artistas Del Barrio Buffalo’s artworks will open on Friday, March 6 and run until March 27 at CEPA Gallery located at 617 Main Street. An opening reception will be held at CEPA Friday, March 6 from 5:30 PM -9:00 PM in their Underground Gallery.
“Supporting efforts to fight human trafficking, and raising awareness among the general public on the powerful impact that trafficking has on the lives of millions of people is of vital importance when it comes to enlisting their involvement in this war on modern day slavery. As an artist, your participation as an activist is a welcome and essential ingredient in this crime fighting undertaking. Thank you. The Typography of Women project is deeply honored to have your support.”-- Celeste Lawson, Producer/Project Director/Co-Director Typography of Women: I Am Not Invisible Cmlpoet17@gmail.com
